About the picture

They're not the most numerous, but definitely the most popular, bird at Hornøya. On this island close to a hundered thousand seabirds breed: common murres, thick-billed murres, puffins, shags, great black-backed gulls, herring gulls, kittiwakes and razorbills.

They all have different preferred nest types and locations. The kittiwakes have individual nests on narrow ledges on the steep side of the cliff, the murres don't build a nest but breed closely together on ledges, razorbills nest between rocks, the gulls on the grass, and puffins underground in burrows.

This atlantic puffin was enjoying some june afternoon sun outside of his burrow, before flying off to hunt in the ocean.
