About the picture

Atlantic puffin sitting outside its burrow, on a sunny day in June, at Hornøya by Vardø. On this island many seabirds nest: common murres, thick-billed murres, razorbills, shags, kittiwakes, herring gulls, great black-backed gulls, eiders, and the most popular amongst visitors: the atlantic puffin (fratercula arctica).

The murres and kittiwakes breed on narrow ledges, the gulls on the grassy flat side of the hill, and the puffins make burrows and nest underground.
