About the picture

Taken in Hamningberg (Båtsfjord municipality), on the Varanger peninsula in Northern Norway, around midnight, on a summer day in June 2024. There was a lot of whale activity in the area, which naturally brought a lot of gull life along as well, following the whales in the hunt for fish.

During a hike along the rocky coastline, which looks like a moon landscape, we discovered a group of thousands of herring gulls and great black-backed gulls spending the night on this beach, where they blended in perfectly with their surroundings. 

In total there were over 2000 gulls on this part of the beach, with many more at sea and along other parts of the coastline.
