About the picture

Arctic terns (rødnebbterner) complete the largest migration amongst birds. They breed in the high arctic, but migrate to literally the opposite side of the earth, to the antarctic in August after breeding season is over. Each spring, they migrate back all the way from the southern hemisphere to the North, maximizing the amount of sunlight they get throughout the year.

They're fierce nest defenders, and will not shy away from chasing predator birds, people, foxes, and even polar bears away from their eggs and young. 

This individual was photographed in Vardø, during the middle of June in 2024.
